Minor Wife
Christopher G. Moore,
Heaven Lake Press

This time out, Bangkok private-eye Vincent Calvino is drawn into a real whodunit - In the grey not-respectable, not-prostitute world of the mia noi, (minor wife), a beautiful young woman is murdered under the most inexplicable of circumstances.   Calvino is brought into the case by a previous acquaintance and quickly finds he has his work cut out for him.   He discovers where murder is concerned, "motive and opportunity" are perpetually clouded by local mores, conniving foreigners, and virtually everyone's inability to tell the truth.   It remains to be seen whether justice will be served, but Calvino intends to do his level-best to get to the bottom of it.   -And with a little luck, and a lot of his own brand of persistence, he just might.   Mystery buffs have a good read in store.
Bangkok Eyes - Jan 2002

"Minor Wife is the seventh novel in the internationally acclaimed Vincent Calvino private eye series. A contemporary murder mystery set in Bangkok - a neighbor and friend, a young ex-prostitute turned artist, is found dead by an American millionaire's minor wife. Her rich expat husband hires Calvino. While searching for the killer in the exclusive clubs and not so exclusive bars of Bangkok, Calvino discovers that a minor wife - mia noi - has everything to do with a woman's status. Some minor wives accept their fate while others snap under the pressure. Calvino enters the fringe of this Thailand sisterhood where the women draw the camp wagons around, protecting and comforting each other. From illegal cock fighting matches to Washington Square, Calvino has a front row seat as the puppet ant the puppet master dance their last dance."
