A Smile in the Land of Smiles.
Reader's Corner: Soi Katoey - For Sale
Traces - Nitelife In Old Bangkok
Graffiti News #229 - Bangkok Hypocrisy

t the bottom of one of our decaying cardboard boxes we came across a 1969 Bernard Trink article / interview of a Bangkok bar owner .   At first reading, it didn't appear overwhelmingly illuminating, however when viewed from an historical perspective, we found it to be a "point-in-time" account of a unique character, typical of the many unique characters that owned and managed Night Entertainment Venues in Bangkok in the '60's and '70s.   Additionally, the article as a whole gives the reader the overall 'flavor' of the Bangkok scene in the late '60s, which at that time still also maintained a large U.S. military presence.
For reference, the below noted Allan's Sportsman's Lounge, was located at the far end of Surawong Road, in the 'sphere' of New Road Nightlife activities, as opposed to the newer Silom / Patpong scene.

  SOI  KATOEY   FOR  SALE  CHEAP
(kicker)

   READER :
      Hello,
Just in case you missed it, I have just become aware that Soi 4 (Silom) is for sale at a price of THB, 3,300,000,000 The listing has actually been live since March
Land for sale in Suriawong, Bangkok for
THB3,000,000,000
https://www.fazwaz.com/property-sales/land-for-sale-in-suriyawong-bangkok-u5343516
One more place whose history will soon have to be more fully documented before it passes into history, I suppose; from Soi Katoey to Soi Dining to Soi Katoye-ish again.
   MIDNITE HOUR:
Thanks for the heads-up.   For readers without a calculator, that's US$ One Hundred Million.   As you have noted, the advert has been up since March, (refreshed then) and is still running.   We note that at the time Soi Twilight (Soi Pratuchai) closed for redevelopment on April 2019, there was talk on the streets (ie, "rumor") that Soi Katoey was also up for sale (and that another of the Thai brewery giants was showing interest).   This time around, however, it is more than rumor.   One of the ongoing sticking points at the time of the original rumor was the land owners also live on the soi at the very end in the family compound.   Should they sell, either the family would have to relocate or they would have to secure an entranceway.   The sale of Soi Katoey remains a wait-and-see item ...however we aren't holding our collective breath on this...

MAP
The upstairs King Sport Bar has become the King's Castle Pool & Karaoke.   In other words, the pool bar wasn't working out, so they added karaoke.   Who would'a thought...
 PATPONG  1
The upstairs Wild Cat Bar is locked down like Alcatraz.   Lack of business will do that to you....
 PATPONG  1
Despite outside appearances, the California's Finest Bar Dispensary Lounge has been stripped out bare to the bone.   They only opened last April   Better luck on the flip side.
 PATPONG  1

MAP
Virgin X and next door Virgin had been alternating - open one month, closed one month.   No more - the Virgin X has had all chattel removed, and the floors swept clean (while they await a new lessee)...
 PATPONG  2

It looks like Crystal Palace has tarted itself up with some left-over 'lips' from the old Kiss A Go-Go on PP1.   They are also hosting Super Pussy ad material out front (as are some other bars).   This ad highlights an effigy of, not surprisingly, Kiss.   "What's this all about, I wonder...?"
 PATPONG  2

The Crown Royal is also sporting an ad for Super Pussy, this version has a life-sized Elvis figure.   And a cat...
 PATPONG  2

We wondered why Vinai's Bar had closed, but now we see it was only an exercise in changing names.   Why, we'll never know...   The new moniker : Cleo Barbeer.   Status quo ante.
 PATPONG  2
MAP
The Stumble Inn Soi Cowboy, closed for a few months, was to become Showtime.   However it looks like the train has run afoul the track...   While the current verbal rumors aren't worth the paper they're written on, the Showtime reportedly will become a katoey 'Revue'.   Perhaps someone has taken second look at their "Business Plans for Dummies"?
 SOI  COWBOY

The long-running Shark is taking a breather.   We suspect they are using this 'time-out' to install wall-to-wall dynamic LED fascia...   (To keep up with the competition, of course...)
 SOI  COWBOY
MAP
The mysterious ground-level Orbit has us guessing....   We'll just have to wait and see...
 NANA  PLAZA
The Mimosa Bar reopened as per their schedule.   Welcome back to the nightgames...
SOI  NANA  -  (SOI  4  SUKHUMVIT)
The King Indian Night Club has taken their signage and faded quietly into the heat and the rains...
SOI  NANA  -  (SOI  4  SUKHUMVIT)
The Fin 69 Massage has shaken off whatever was ailing it, and rolled the red carpet back out.   Located deep in the Soi.
SOI  NANA  -  (SOI  4  SUKHUMVIT)
MAP
We noted no changes in Soi Katoey this survey.   All the Venues were open despite the monsoon rains...
 SOI  KATOEY (Silom  Soi  4)
While we noted a near catastrophic closure of Venues on Khao San this last period, the brand-new Rocco Station opened on schedule.   This is the 3rd Venue of the 'Rocco group' on Khao San Road.    May they continue to rock 'n roll...
 KHAO  SAN  ROAD

While Mammoth bar closed down this period, the Mammoth Massage opened up a few doors down.   Rub-a-dub-dub.
 KHAO  SAN  ROAD
What was the Sky 666 has now become the Singha x Sky Club.   Can we just say "Sky Club"?
 KHAO  SAN  ROAD
The Sao Thai Massage has opened newly just above the Hippy De Bar.   May they continue to slip 'n slide...
 KHAO  SAN  ROAD
The The Club had been closed recently, but they reopened 3 months ago.   This time around, however, they closed and took down their landmark sign - a sure portent they've fallen afoul the fates...
 KHAO  SAN  ROAD
The Wakanda Pub & Restaurant, has gone the way of the Locustella magna   They had been opening and closing apparently on a whim, but have since called it a night.
 KHAO  SAN  ROAD
The three late-nite bars below, (The Fat Rabbit, the Bar Roam, and The Bar Next Door were on a narrow, darkened sub-soi off the main Khao San Road.   That entire area has been blocked off for a major redevelopment.   It is too soon to tell if any of them will relocate to new premises.    Ah, they come and they go...

 KHAO  SAN  ROAD
The Khaosan Center is apparently destined to be part of a redevelopment project.   Once the indoor-outdoor scene of live music and dancing, they are now officially MIA, leaving behind a darkened hull on the main Khao San Road.
 KHAO  SAN  ROAD

Two additional bars (for which we were unable to locate photos) have also closed in the interim.   May they find that greener grass...
      - Boozy
      - Sugar Bar
 KHAO  SAN  ROAD

MAP
The No Idea vacated these digs in May 2023, moving into their new place a couple sois down.   The building remained fallow until last month, when the Lomo Nuru massage completed their (extensive) renovations.   Welcome them to the slippery slope (NPI)...
 SOI  22 Sukhumvit Rd
The Bit Style Fantasy Massage Club has closed and reopened a number of times.   As at this last survey, they are once again open.   We wish them constancy.   Located in Subsoi Starlight.
 SOI  22 Sukhumvit Rd
The Absolute has been a bar and a massage at various times, on various sub sois.   This time around, it is a massage, and it is closed.   No guarantee it will have not spawned anew next month - it's on our perpetual "Wait And See" list...
 SOI  22 Sukhumvit Rd
The indoor-outdoor The Mesh sports bar / beer house has just opened in the just-opened Four Points (a Sheraton) hotel.   Located deep in Soi 22.   Wish them luck as they give a roll of the dice....
 SOI  22 Sukhumvit Rd
MAP
We found no new changes at Soi 8 Sukhumvit Road this month.   The rains however provided us an opportunity to snap a couple of colorful pics...
 SOI  8 Sukhumvit
MAP
The new indoor-outdoor Check In 11 looks to be staying busy in spite of the rains. Welcome to the machine.

 SOI  AMBASSADOR  (Sukhumvit Soi 11)
The C Care Massage Bangkok is the newest massage parlor on the block, located in the cul de sac next to the Hillary 11.   They are a 'massage for health' massage parlor.   Welcome them to partytown...
 SOI  AMBASSADOR  (Sukhumvit Soi 11)
The Juicy (a 'club') is renovating, and should be reopening next month.   However the upstairs Bafros Bar & Lounge is still going strong.
 SOI  AMBASSADOR  (Sukhumvit Soi 11)
MAP
The We For You (Special For You) has switched off the lights and pulled down the steel shutters.   Whether it stays closed remains to be seen.   We'll get back atcha with an update next round.
7  CENTER  POINT (Sukhumvit Soi 7)
MAP
The J-Spot is yet another new Japanese-oriented club on Subsoi 3.   Nippon-oriented nuru massages, clubs and snacks have been dominating the slow-but-sure Soi Dead Artists renaissance over the last couple of years.
SOI  DEAD  ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
The Fox 33 Nuru is yet another new "nuru" massage on the Soi.   One has to wonder, how many 'nuru' massages can the Soi (or for that matter, Bangkok) sustain?   And these 'nuru' massages are not inexpensive...   What is it I am not seeing here?
SOI  DEAD  ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
Fortunately we've long since given up trying to decipher the meaning of Nitespot names.   Just as well, because we would never be able to suss out the Dizzy Sweedtie club.   May lady luck smile...   Located in Subsoi 4 in the old Sabaka Karaoke digs.
SOI  DEAD  ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
Located half way down Subsoi Pan Pan, another shophouse is being converted into a bar.   If all goes well, this time next month we will see the opening of the LVNDR Lounge.   More pix next time 'round...
SOI  DEAD  ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
Another attempt to combine a lounge / coffee shop with a cannabis outlet.   The Thai High Coffee Shop Lounge has been open for some months now, although we haven't seen a stream of customers going in or out...   We are reserving judgement on whether the venue is actually a functioning Night Entertainment Venue - if not, we'll delete from the survey.
SOI  DEAD  ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
The Bonita specialty massage has replaced the long-running Thanks Massage on Subsoi Pan Pan.   It's prime agendum unchanged...
SOI  DEAD  ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
The back end of Subsoi Pan Pan has become a Micro-Ginza - home to a number of Japanese snacks, 'clubs' and specialty massage parlors (the long-standing Hideaway Bar being the exception).   The new Venues noted this round are the Best Nuru Massage, the We Snack Bar & Karaoke, and one nuru Venue sporting a red sign without a Thai or English name.

SOI  DEAD  ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
The Long Time No See is closed yet again.   Whether this is permanent has yet to be determined.   However historically speaking, frequent openings and closings usually don't end well...   A wait-and-see item...    (File photo)
SOI  DEAD  ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
The Citadel, having opened its doors only this May, was in lockdown when we passed by the other evening.   We'll keep an ear to the ground and if there is a change in status, we'll get back atcha...   (File photo)
SOI  DEAD  ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)
Although the Boxer signage was up on the big marquee, their shop was as dark as a poisoned well when we surveyed this last week.   Yet another wait-and-see item...   (File photo)
SOI  DEAD  ARTIST (Sukhumvit Soi 33)

MAP
We saw no changes in the Venue population, either up or down (in spite of the rains).   As the street sign indicates, Soi Eden is Soi 7/1 (one of the few Sukhumvit sois that doesn't have a formal name).
 SOI  EDEN  (Sukhumvit 7 / 1)

Traces of Bangkok's Early Years

This month Midnite Hour continues to review Bangkok's Nightlife Scene offering live entertainment, both foreign and local, as found in the bigger hotels, expat Night Entertainment Areas, and other Venues within the City.

The Buccaneer, was one of a few "Nitespots' the Manohra Hotel tried to popularize during that era.   The Manohra is still there today - located half way between New Road and Patpong, which, as far as entertainment is concerned, made sense in the '60's and 70's.   However the New Road Night Entertainment scene and the Patpong scene are no longer major Night Entertainment draws - and as they faded, so did the Nitespots along Surawong Road.

Extract Bernard Trink's Nite Owl column
The Thai Yonok opened several months prior, advertising itself as a respectable 'restaurant', free of the stigma of freelancers that had been an integral part of the scene at its predecessor, the Dew Drop.   Here, Bernard Trink advises in his Nite Owl column that the freelancers had returned.

Here we take note of the seldom mentioned, but popular Silver Star Bar on Silom Road.   Trink's mention of "30 partners" is the now-antiquated term for "30 hostesses" (with whom one could sit and buy drinks for).   Also mentioned is the California Bar on New Petchburi Road (the 'Golden Mile').   Bars and massage parlors on the Golden Mile were often named after states or cities in the U.S.A.
May 1969

The Sani Chateau ran this same advert the previous month - upon reopening after an extended renovation.   Frank Nagai was a popular singer known for his baritone voice, and actor (Japanese films).   Sani Chateau was located in the Gaysorn Night Entertainment Area.
May 1969

The Tropicana / Ramayana were in the Rama Hotel on Silom near New Road.
May 1969
The Nite Owl column mentions that Kahu and The Trippers were making "the 'Upcountry circuit'.   Translation: they were performing at the joint US-Thai military bases.
May 1969

The Fire Cracker Club in the First Hotel wasn't near any of the mainstream Night Entertainment Areas, but remained popular during the R&R years.
May 1969

The newly opened The Electric Shadow was the place to go that month, with their original, immersive psychedelic decor and shows.   Located at the Chavalit Mansion on Sukhumvit near Soi 11.   Its only (psychedelic) competition was the Red & Blue at Siam Square.

VICARIOUS ART CRIMES   #229

MIDNITE HOUR's

But is it ....ART ?

Check out Bangkok's dedicated page at "BKK Graf.com" <link>

GRAFFITI  IN  THE  NEWS

The definition of "Graffiti" is, and will remain, "The unauthorized markings on another's property".   The operative word here is "unauthorized".   Once permission has been obtained, a graffito can miraculously turn into a "mural" or a "work" or even a "creative community effort".   -Even though its effect on the neighbors doesn't change in the least...

Nothing points out the fuzzy logic more than the current brouhaha in Bangkok.   The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s “Krungthep Creative Streets” project commissioned street art murals at various points in the city.   One such street mural was by Carolina Adan Caro, a French artist.   It was, not surprisingly, bombed by another graffiti artist - and a complaint worked its way up to the Bangkok Governor through the (co-hosting) French Embassy.   Whereby the Bangkok Governor rushed to the scene of the crime to roundly condemn the atrocity.   We note that if the Gov'ner is going to personally condemn every graffiti that is placed over an 'authorized' piece, he will be a very busy man, indeed.   Or is that level of zeal only reserved for 'political' occasions.....
